Did you know that for a phone to have a great display it needs to have good color accuracy, high color gamut, vivid colors, high contrast ratio, low reflectance or glare from ambient light, as well as fast screen response times? In this article we will go over the 7 most important features of a phone’s display.
- Color accuracy: For an accurate display there has to be three primary colors: red, green and blue. If these three primary colors are not accurately displayed on the screen then the user will see incorrect colors and may experience eye strain due to eye fatigue. Also, if the colors are off, viewing in bright sunlight can cause the colors to appear washed out and faded.
- High color gamut: The colors that are displayed on a display have to be of a certain color gamut, otherwise (for example) the reds will look blood orange rather than blood red and green will seem yellowish. Displaying colors within an error (or close to an error) is detrimental to the user’s experience because it causes eye fatigue and lowers perceived contrast along with it.
- Vivid colors: The colors have to be vibrant, meaning they have to pop! When displaying colors the eye can perceive more fine details in bright colors. A good example of this would be an apple which has soft shades of red, green, and yellow overlaid with a crisp white skin which surrounds the red and yellow spots.
- High contrast ratio: The contrast ratio is how much lighter one color is relative to another and is measured in units of 100 (100 units x 100 units = 1000 units). So for example the color red has a contrast ratio of 10 because it is 100 times darker than white (1) and its lightness is 10 times less than white (2). The higher the contrast ratio, or the more white (1) a color is compared to another color, the better. But be careful because too high of a contrast ratio can cause eye fatigue.
- Low reflectance: If a phone has a high reflectance it will be hard to see and read in bright environments such as direct sunlight or even indoor lighting that is very bright. The record holder for low reflectance is the Samsung Galaxy S3 with 3% reflectance while the iPhone 5 has 25% reflectance. There are many solutions out there to reduce reflection such as using anti-reflective coating but some are much better than others.
- Low glare from ambient light: When ambient light hits the screen it gives off glare that makes it harder to read as well as causing eye fatigue. The very best screens are able to be viewed in bright daylight with no problems at all because they have a low reflectance and low glare.
- Fast screen response times: When you tap or click on an element on the display of your phone, it has to register that input immediately so you don’t miss any input information such as when you are aiming at something like a running enemy in a game. A great screen will register that input within 1-2 milliseconds and modern displays are getting better and better everyday but only time will tell how fast they will become.
- Battery life: The screen of your device is one of the biggest battery drains in your phone so to get the best battery life you will have to have a display that stays on for long periods of time and it should also be able to turn on quickly without having too much of a lag.
- Display size: The bigger the screen, the better because you can see more things at once and it is easier to read email, text, watch videos, or play games on a big screen than a small one. However, there is a point after which increasing the display size doesn’t make sense because it could lead to software compatibility issues and cost more money due to manufacturing costs as well as price increases.
There are many more factors that affect the display like screen size, resolution, viewing angles, location of the screen in a device (bezel size) and many others. These are the most important seven that affect your everyday experience. If display is a factor that you don’t want to compromise with, you should check out Honor 8C display once.
